Der Superheld „Shazam!“ wurde 1940 von Bill Parker und C.C. Beck als Captain Marvel erfunden und erschien im Fawcett-Verlag. DC verklagte den Konkurrenten wegen Urheberrechtsverletzung (Captain Marvel sei ein Superman-Plagiat), 1953 musste Fawcett die Serie nach 150 Ausgaben einstellen. 1972 erwarb der Marvel-Verlag die Namensrechte an der Figur und schuf einen eigenen „Captain Marvel“, der bis heute (in weiblicher Form) Bestand hat. 1973 belebte DC den Fawcett-Helden wieder – diesmal unter dem Titel Shazam! – dem Ausruf, der den Jungen Billy Batson zum Superhelden werden lässt. Mittlerweile ist „Shazam“ auch zum Namen avanciert und hat „Captain Marvel“ verdrängt.
